There is almost nothing better then spending a perfect day out in Edinburgh. I don’t mean as a tourist, but just as a local. For fun, without pressure, without too much intent.
That’s mostly because Edinburgh is one of my favourite places in Scotland. The Brit and I used to live there and it was marvellous. Though it was getting dark and stormy toward the winter, Edinburgh never ceased to amaze me. Since moving to Stirling we’ve gone back so often that we call it our weekly visit (but of course, now I work in Edinburgh!).
While this is in no way meant to be a guide to spending a day in Edinburgh, this is what my favourite day in Edinburgh would consist of.
STARTING WITH A YUMMY BRUNCH
There is nothing quite like starting a nice day with brunch. Urban Angel is one of my favourite in Edinburgh. It always has a big queue on weekends, so we’d get there early and enjoy their food and healthy smoothies.
STROLLING THROUGH THE GARDENS
From there walk down George Street, before popping by Princes Street, admiring the famous Castle and the Scott Monument. We would go enjoy the sun (because it’s a perfect day!) in the gardens. This would involve lounging with a book and my favourite person of course.
TEA AND CAKE WITH FRIENDS
My best afternoons ever in Scotland have been spent having tea and cake with friends. Just chatting, tea and cake in the best of company. You can’t beat that.
TRY SOMETHING NEW
On my ideal day, I would try something new. It’s the best of days. My list of things to do in Edinburgh is getting shorter, but I’d do some research and find something new to see or do. In the summer, I’d try to pop by an outdoor film showing, or catch a fringe show. In the winter, I’d try visiting a new museum or even an attraction like the Mary King’s Close or Dynamic Earth. Last May we unexpectedly passed by the National Museum and found the viewing platform, what a fun new discovery!
DINNER AT MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT (AND NOT WAIT IN QUEUE)
Perhaps I have highly popular taste, but all the places I like most in Edinburgh are always rammed. I’d definitely go have dinner at El Cartel (or Kanpai if I’m feeling particularly fancy), grab a table right away and enjoy the amazing food.
NIGHT OUT IN TOWN
To end the day I would either like to catch a show at the Festival Theatre, Usher Hall or Playhouse. There are so many cool things happening in Edinburgh, it’s good to take advantage of it. We would walk down Princes Street on our way there, getting a good look at the multicoloured sunset over the castle.
