Bake Off Bake Along | Vol au Vent

Hi! Happy Monday!

Today is going to be a short post – I just wanted to keep you updated on my bake off bake along. Except for the first week, it’s been about a month now that I’ve been baking along to the Great British Bake Off and it’s been so fun!

However, the last two weeks I’ve (sort of) attempted the show stoppers and let me tell you, they have been my worst weeks by far!

This week I was tempted right away by the vol au vent!

I love vol au vent! It’s one of my top 5 favourite meals (perhaps top two actually). Yes I said meal because where I’m from we don’t have them as amuse-gueule, we have them as main meals. I have never been able to find full sized ones in the UK, so I thought it was the perfect time to attempt them and make a lovely meal out of them!

So instead of doing 48 mini vol au vent – I made 10 meal sized ones.

I made the puff pastry along about 4 hours and then used the rim of some glasses to create the bottoms and rings. I assembled them together and into the oven they went!

I almost immediately I knew that it was wrong! It started melting away like on the show. I was a bit sad, but then I watched them rise slowly. In the end, they didn’t turn out that badly actually, but they definitely didn’t look as good as the ones we buy back home!

I was disappointed with them – I don’t often fail at baking so it’s always somewhat disappointing to not do as good as I thought (overachiever much, right?). But nevertheless, we wanted to use them for dinner!

The Brit helped (by help I mean he did the whole thing…) and we did a seafood mix with some peas and some white wine bechamel sauce.

It was delicious! But then I realised how dense my vol au vent were – not as light and flaky as the ones back home. Moral of the story is maybe I’ll try again one day – my love for vol au vent will not subside – but I’ll definitely be buying some ready made pastry!
